TeatroGioco Vita & Imperfect Dancers “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Italy)

The masters of shadow play from Italy will perform at the Krakow festival this year.

Moving multimedia projections and contemporary shadow techniques, with Mendelssohn’s music and Shakespeare’s magical story in the background – all this in a wonderful fairy-tale production by the world famous shadow puppetry theatre, TeatroGioco Vita.

Teatro Gioco Vita was founded in 1971 as a youth theatre working with animation in a broad sense. At the end of the 1970s, the group became interested in shadow play, which became their guiding aesthetic principle. The troupe, with its premises in Teatro Municipale Di Piazenza, worked together with many institutional theatres and philharmonics, such as La Fenicein Venice, London’s Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scalain Milan, Arena in Verona, Opera Royale de Walloniein Liege, Teatro dell’Operain Rome, Teatro Regioin Turine, Fondazione Teatro Comunalein Modena and Piccolo Teatro in Milan. They performed all over the world, in the USA, Brasil, Mexico, Japan, Israel and many other countries.

Today, the Italian Ministry of Culture and Emilia Romania Region have listed Gioco Vita as an innovative stationary theatre, which not only works on theatrical productions but also prepares workshops for schools and young people. TeatroGioco Vita has, in addition, two studios for developing the experimental side of their work.

Imperfect Dancers

The ballet group was founded in 1990 as a result of the combining of two groups: Arte Danza Giancarla Vantaggio and Lipika Danza Anity Bucchi. From its very beginnings the group, which is today housed in the Teatro Verdi in Pizza, was distinguished in artistic circles through its intense cooperation with painters, sculptors, choreographers and musicians. The Imperfect Dancers performed at various festivals, such as Festival De Danse de Cannes and the AIDS Tanz-Gala in Regensburg. Their shows are in the repertoire of Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari.

Fabrizio Montecchi

Since 1978 Fabrizio Montecchi has worked continually with TeatroGioco Vita, where he prepares all the shows and plays various roles - from being an animator to shadow puppet maker or director. He also organizes apprenticeships and runs theatrical workshops, not only in Italy but also in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Spain and Scandinavia. He has worked as a stage designer and shadow maker in the Piccolo Teatro in Milan and in Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis.

"A Midsummer Night’s Dream"

Based on the Shakespeare’s play, the show is presented in the convention of a shadow play, but director Fabrizio Montecchi decided to focus on the lovers wandering through the woods and skip the figures of Theseus and Hyppolyta. The lovers’ stories intertwine with the stories of Puck, Oberon and Titania. The spectators will be able to follow the dancers who become lovers, expressing the feelings that bring them together and separate them.

Fabrizio Montecchi on the performance:

“To us, the creators of this show, there were two underlying artistic needs or artistic desires behind it. Firstly, to further develop our adventure with language and expressive forms, which we started many years ago when we decided to combine shadow play with dance through the sublime means of music. The second is the attempt to face up to William Shakespeare’s art, with the use of a very subtle, delicate approach, as if “tiptoeing”. And so the idea of starting with Felix Mendelsohn’s Incidental Music for a Midsummer Night’s Dream is an excellent synthesis of these two needs. We wanted to measure up to one of the most visionary of Shakespeare’s plays, which in a way is also full of “shadows”, and wished to present it with the help of Mendelsohn’s music, whose sound is perhaps one of the most charming instances of the “translation” of Shakespeare’s comedy. In other words the Mendelsohn-Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream has allowed us to investigate the expressive possibilities of the languages used.
