Music in large doses, acrobatic displays, a fusion of Japanese percussion with African rhythms, jazz, funk and dance – a great party where the audiences are invited to join in with a group of the Dutch artists associated with “Oorkaan”.
Oorkaan is a Dutch organizationwhich produces shows on the theme of all kinds of live music as played by artists who perform classical, world music and jazz. Most frequently their shows are without words, as is the case with the Percossa group, which has been employed for the purposes of the Box Brothersproject to be shown in Kraków.
Percossa consists of four percussionists for whom rhythm has no secrets. Niels van Hoorn, Janwill van der Poll, Eric Robillard and René Spierings are artists who breathe rhythm. A Percossa show can be compared only to a roller-coaster ride, just as Percossa moves its audience upward and downward from one musical style to another. The exciting African rhythm or tender melodic themes, impressive Japanese drums followed by hypnotically sounding minimalist music, jazz, funk, dance – everything that makes percussion such an incredibly attractive family of instruments.
Box Brothers is a play written and performed by the Percossa musicians and directed by Margrith Vrenegoor. It tells the story of four brothers who once lived in a box long ago, with their best friend the Great Drum. They were called the Oldest, Middle, Youngest, and the Fool. And so the brothers set off into the world to look for their fortune, and taking of course the Great Drum with them …
Apart from large doses of fantastic music, the show will also involve an acrobatic show.
This is the only show during the Materia Prima Festival which is designed for all generations.
Reviews:
“The fusion of Japanese percussion with African rhythms, minimalist music, jazz, funk and dance into one party, so great that the children who watch it can’t stay in their seats, they just get up and dance!”
[Trouw, Anita Twaalfhoven]
You really won’t be able to stay in your seat. You will feel the rhythm and energy of this show in your entire body, it’s just enough to sit down and listen!
[De Telegraaf, Frederike Berntsen]
They use well-measured pauses which make the whole room vibrate! The artists confront one another all the time, which often turns into a series of comedy gags. Their gestures and mimicry are so literally and unpretentiously part of what these four are doing that their clownish style makes the entire theatre burst with laughter!
